For 2 years, I've been working at losing weight through a combination of sensible eating and exercise. When I started, my concept of "sensible eating" was no fat/lowfat everything if I could help it, lean proteins, lots of fresh vegetables and fruit. I almost eliminated dairy from my diet entirely except for fat-free flavorless slices of stuff that shouldn't even be classified as cheese (as a matter of fact, I believe it's not; most packages say "cheese product"). I struggled with seesaw weight loss and actually gained weight more easily than I had before. The pounds would come off slowly and painfully but get added right back on again. One night I watched a lot of old Julia Childs French Chef episodes and decided I was done with this modern interpretation of "sensible eating." What sense is there in making yourself miserable and frustrated? I retooled my sensible diet to include full-fat cheeses and foods in moderation. I'm not going to eat an entire wedge of Valdeon in one go, but weighing off 1 oz. and enjoying it thoroughly after a healthy meal is entirely appropriate, and as I eventually learned, good for me! I've changed nothing else about my regimen and the weight is finally coming off steadily. I've lost 10lbs over the past year and am now 3lbs from my target goal. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone but I'm certainly a believer.

I think the problem is that the cheese they serve in public school does not technically qualify as cheese. I don't consider the plastic wrapped slices of bright yellow cheese product to be real cheese. (At least, that was the cheese of choice when I was in high school.)

So, yes, "cheese" is causing weight gain, if you mean fake cheese made up of hydrogenated oil, water, and food coloring because budget cuts made the school board order the dirt cheapest thing they could. Otherwise, no.
